THE BAD HABITS I'M NOT GIVING UP ANYTIME SOON.

Yet another great meme from the Literary Feline over at Musings Of A Bookish Kitty, how could I resist joining in her ...

'My Bad Habits (That I Refuse to Give Up)'?

Mine being ...

Naming things. Way beyond 'Willy', 'Noel', 'Yak' and 'Son of Yak' to name but a few of our house plants I've now started naming inanimate objects - though in my defence only those objects that are particularly important to me such as Pooter (the laptop) and Madge (my electric wheelchair).
  • Doing FaceBook and other daft 'Quizzes'. Just a bit of harmless fun, or is it? Recently I've discovered (A) 'which song will be played at my funeral' (it's Angels by Robbie Williams for those of you who are even remotely interested), (B) 'which witch from literature I am' (would it surprise you to learn its Hermione Granger'?) as well as 'Named that Stephen King thriller' (a not too bad 8 out of 10) and happened upon my Halloween name (Lurking Web). I've included links below should one of the bad habits you refuse to give up be participating in such things.
  • Texting endless 'bad' jokes to Mr T's younger brother. A habit that can only get worse now that he is a convert to FaceBook.
  • Eating all manner of strange concoctions that turn Mr T's stomach. Apparently crisp (chips to those across the pond) and mayonnaise sandwiches are hardly Haute cuisine, peanut butter and sliced banana on toast is nothing short of nauseating and as for sardines with sage and onion stuffing? You don't want to know his thoughts on this.
  • Ssh, don't tell my audiologist but Falling asleep with the tv on. Classed as 'bad sleep hygiene' and apparently to be avoided at all cost. Something my sleep deprived, tinnitus suffering self doesn't want to know when unable to get to sleep because of all the various ringing, buzzing, whistling, hissing and so on.

.... Please do be sure to let us know if you do decide to play along in any of the above. Oh, and don't forget to share the bad habit(s) you refuse to give up.

MY AURA AND ME.

Such beautiful words, don't you think?

 FaceBook.

Becoming increasingly fascinated by crystals etc I was interested to read this post  on auras over at Sherry's Mama Diaries.

Hand over a piece of plain white paper I stared at the tip of my middle finger until .... what do you know I actually saw a colour which according to the Psychic Library site which Sherry had kindly linked up to was ....

Indigo
- Pertains to the third eye and pituitary gland. It is the colour of deep feeling, intuition and sensitivity.

What about you, what colour is your aura? Click here to find out.

FEELING SOMEWHAT ... CUE CHARACTER WITH ROUND EYES, LARGE DOWNTURNED CURVED MOUTH & HIGH-SET CURVED EYEBROWS.*

Because of their incredible adoption rate and speed of evolution they are evolving faster than ancient languages such as hieroglyphics. As a visual language they have already eclipsed its ancient Egyptian precursor which took centuries to develop.

Rapidly replacing 'LOL' and 'OMG' they are used by eight out of ten people in the UK to communicate with 72% of eighteen to twenty five year olds claiming it is easier to put their feelings across in this way.

Added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013, the name comes from the Japanese word meaning pictures and characters.

According to this article the top ten most popular symbols are ...
  • Smiley face
  • Crying with laughter
  • Love heart
  • Beaming red cheeks
  • Thumbs up
  • Tongue out winking face
  • Blowing kiss
  • Winking face
  • Confused
  • See no evil monkey.

One eminent linguistic expert has it that Emoji is the fastest growing 'language' in the UK.

Without a doubt great fun, creative and quicker than trying to express yourself with words. Call me old fashioned but I'm feeling somewhat ....

(that's confused to you and me) by this growing trend that has young people feeling it is easier to communicate their feelings in this way and slightly....

(* worried) that one day I'll open a book and find not words but a whole load of characters like these.

Apparently my Emoji is the ....

..... Sparkling Heart
{Ah, to be in love. You're a hopeless romantic, always looking for 'the one'. Finding a soul mate occupies most of your time, because you know your one true love is out there.}

Hmm, not too sure what Mr T will make of my most of my time being occupied by my search for a soul mate.

But what about you, what type of Emoji are you? Do this quiz to find out and be sure to let me know in the comments.

And finally ...

How many of these 10 historic historic events as told through Emoji can you decipher?

LITTLE THINGS PLEASE LITTLE MINDS ......

First seen on FaceBook I can't begin to tell you how much fun I'm having with THIS.

    And talking of FB .....

I'm becoming seriously addicted to those quizzes/Know Your Personality type 'tests' that keep appearing. Why, in the last few weeks alone I've learnt ......

    • I'm 33% tight. TAKE TEST and discover just how thrifty you actually are.
    • I'm a good natured realist. TAKE TEST to reveal your personality type.
    • Obviously a saint, I scored 0%. TAKE TEST to discover just how naughty you are.
    • I've eaten 63 out of 65 of the items on the 'Classic UK Confectionery' list. How many have you eaten? TAKE TEST to find out.
    • According to Book Week Scotland my literary avatar is Elizabeth Bennet of Pride and Prejudice. TAKE TEST to reveal your literary avatar.
    • Convinced I was a Hobbit when I am in fact an Ent. TAKE TEST to discover which Middle Earth character you are.
    • I'd be Luna Lovegood. TAKE TEST to find out which Harry Potter character you'd be.
    • I'm 32% which apparently is average for someone my age. TAKE TEST to see how 'Down With The Kids' you are.
    • With her dark hair and tall, willow like figure Gemma Atherton is an obvious choice to play the fair-haired short me. TAKE TEST to find out who would play you in a movie.
    • They say two weeks but to be honest I doubt I'd last a day, two at most. TAKE TEST to see how long you'd survive after the apocalypse.
And then in a truly shocking discovery I learnt ......
    • I have a female brain. TAKE TEST to discover the sex of your brain.
Here's hoping you can access all the links. Be sure to let us know what you thought of the Stickman and what your test results say about you.

TAKING A SELFIE WITH MY INNER ANIMAL

Quiet, observant, and thoughtful. Interested in maintaining order and harmony, avoiding fast-moving cars, and respecting everyone’s feelings. I'm often described by the few people who know me deeply as being incredibly sensitive and trustworthy.

Yes, I'm a deer although I also think I have certain owl, sloth, meerkat, elephant and, more surprisingly, wolf like traits.

Want to know your animal type?

Click HERE to find out. Oh and do be sure to let us know.

'Selfie', 'digital detox', and 'unlike' are among the list of new words to have been added to the online edition of the Oxford English Dictionary

I scored 80% in THIS QUIZ - not bad for an old fogey. What about you, what did you score?

    TOMORROW IS INTERNATIONAL KISS/CYSSAN/KUSSIJANAN DAY.

    The Kiss
    Gustav Klimt,
    1907–1908.

July 6th aka International Kissing Day ...... A day in which the whole world embraces the kiss or a day in which we kiss people of different nationalities? Hmm, I suspect it's probably the former rather than the latter.

    Anyway,

A first kiss between soon to become lovers, a formal kiss on the hand, a 'mwah' on one cheek or both (Osculum as it was known to the ancient Romans), a kiss between mother and child, a kiss goodbye, lets face it kissing is everywhere but did you know ........

    1. The science of kissing is called philematology
    2. The word kiss is believed to have originated from the old English word cyssan from the the Germanic word kussijanan or kuss
    3. Seen as a sign of respect, thanks and agreement in ancient Greco-Roman cultures, the early Christians  kissed one another in highly specific settings that distinguished them from non-Christians
    4. The expression 'kiss my ass' is known to have been used as early as 1705
    5. The term 'French kiss', first used in the English language in the 1920's, was used as a slur on French culture which was believed to be overly concerned with all matters sexual
    6. Kissing was used to 'seal' a wedding contract in ancient Roman times
    7. Not only does kissing release dopamine, the so-called happy hormone, and  oxytocin, a natural calming chemical but according to one website it also burns up to 2.6 calories a minute which means that the world's longest kiss of 46 hours and 24 minutes burnt up, well, lots of calories
    8. 50% of people have their 'first kiss', something studies suggest we remember more than our first sexual encounter, before the age of 14
    9. Nothing to do with our being right or left handed,  two-thirds of us tilt our heads to the right when we kiss - something of which the average person spends approximately 20,160 minutes of their life doing
    10. Signing a letter with an 'X' represents the contact of the lips during a kiss.
And now on to what we've all been asking ourselves, am I a good kisser?

Well, lets take Seventeen magazine's quiz HERE to find out.

Phew! Coming from a magazine written for the older teenager I would have been dismayed to have been told anything other than .....

You are an amazing kisser. You're the perfect blend of skill and passion. You still get kind of nervous before (and after) a kiss, but that’s totally okay — a lot of guys get nervous too! You know that a great kiss is about wanting to be with someone, so the next time you feel shy, ask your guy to watch a romantic movie, then suggest copying the movie star lip-lock. He'll love your sense of spontaneity, and if the kiss doesn't work out exactly like the on-screen version, you can laugh about it later!

DOCTORS LOOKING YOUNGER? CHOOSING CLOTHES FOR COMFORT RATHER THAN STYLE? YOU, MY FRIEND, ARE SHOWING SIGNS OF GETTING OLD.

    1. Thinking teachers/policemen/doctors look really young - They qualify at twelve now, don't they?
    2. When you start complaining more about things - Put simply, there are increasingly more things to be complained about
    3. You get shocked by how racy music videos are - To think my granddad was shocked by the gyrations of dance troupe Hot Gossip
    4. Taking a cushion to the (football match) because the seats are so uncomfortable - What can I say, I like my home comforts
    5. Buying newspapers every day - Technically not guilty of this as its Husband dearest who actually buys the paper

Not all bad, I'm only recently beginning to show five of the 50 signs that I'm getting older.

    The bad news?

I've actually shown these other sixteen signs for longer than I care to remember.

    1. Falling asleep in front of the TV - If only programmes were more interesting
    2. Feeling stiff - Aw, that hurts
    3. Groaning when you bend down - Not a problem any more, I have one of those 'grab stick' things
    4. Hating noisy pubs - As if it wasn't bad enough we now have mobile phones to contend with
    5. Struggling to use technology - It's not my fault something new coes along every second day
    6. Not knowing any songs in the top ten - No, but I can tell you which are the top ten best selling novels
    7. Choosing clothes and shoes for comfort rather than style - Oh dear! Guilty as charged BUT even if not stylish now these things will come back into fashion again ..... just look at flaired trousers and wedges
    8. You talk to a colleague who doesn't know what an Opal Fruit is - Just as a Snickers will always be a Marathon, Starburst will forever be Opal Fruits
    9. Allowing yourself a mid-afternoon nap - It's environmentally friendly, saves on heating during these cold, damp English winters
    10. When you know your alcohol limit - If only the same could be said of my chocolate intake
    11. Owning a carriage clock - Huh! What did I say earlier? Now back in fashion, I don't know what they're talking about
    12. Taking an unnaturally healthy interest in the local free newspaper - And who is to blame for this? You. Where do you think I get lots of my Media Monday articles?
    13. When you can't lose six pounds in two days any more - We are talking six pounds in weight and not six pounds in sterling, right?
    14. Never going out without your coat - What can I say? As Hd has got older and now feels the cold himself he is no longer so eager to give me his coat
    15. Taking a keen interest in dressing for the weather - As above
    16. You start wearing cardigans - Considered a bit of a trend setter ..... What? You don't believe me?  ...... Cardigans will become fashionable again
    So ..........

Presuming that you are sitting comfortably on your cushion and that (A) Your fingers aren't too stiff to type, (B) You haven't fallen asleep in front of the TV or are having a mid-afternoon nap and (C) You aren't struggling with the latest technology just how many signs of growing old will you admit to?

Commissioned by a life insurance company specialising in cover for the over 50's (not that I'm that old yet I hasten to add) click HERE to view the list.

    MILKSHAKES AND BOOK SPINE POETRY.

Having been abandoned by Husband dearest for the day (altogether 'ahhhh') on Saturday I resigned myself to an hour and a half of Big Brother on the TV, reading and browsing the blogosphere - I know (sighs) its hard but someone has to do it.

Anyway, whilst visiting my blogger buddies I came across this FUN POST over at Mama Zen's The Zen of Motherhood site.

What kind of a milkshake am I? Hmm, I wonder.

You are fair, principled and very tolerant.
You have a strong personality, but others still appreciate you.
You know your own tastes and values.
You couldn't be someone else if you tried.
You are intensely passionate, especially about causes and people you believe in.
    You are very idealistic.
You try to live your life with a higher purpose.
You want every one of your days to mean something.

    Guessed yet?

    Need a clue?

Yeah, given that its rumoured that I have this running through my veins instead of blood, would it surprise you to know I'm a .......

    Chocolate milkshake.

So what about you, what kind of a milkshake are you? Take the quiz HERE to find out and be sure to let us know.

And talking of chocolate, don't you just love this ......

And now for one I made found earlier ....

Welcome to Kate, The Midnight Book Girl, who recently stopped by Pen and Paper.

What a great blog she has, I love her header and THIS POST on Book Spine Poetry which for those of you who don't know is a meme in which, yeah you guessed, you create a line of poetry using the spines of books.

    Sound like fun?

I thought so and so, without further ado, here is my attempt using some of the books recently received for review.

    Speaking from among the bones,
    The last tears of Scotland,
    Three Kings - One Throne!
    Hubble Bubble
    And the soft wind blows
    The Devil's Ribbon.

Not bad though I do say so myself.

    WAX-ING LYRICAL.

Not a fan of either the so-called boyband One Direction OR waxworks - far too scary for my liking (and that's to say nothing of the waxworks) - it totally passed me by that they had recently been immortalised forever (or at least until they are melted down to make way for the next 'big thing') in wax.

Hard to tell the real from the wax version in the above photo shoot, I wonder if you'll do any better in this fun QUIZ (fingers crossed that you can access it)..... with a score of 14 out of 16 I know I did.

    WHICH CLASS ARE YOU?

Ah, the British class system, said to be so complicated that not even we ourselves understand it.

Traditionally falling into the categories of working, middle or upper class, some say it isn't just a matter of the type of job you do, where you live or even how much you earn so much as it is about attitude, of who you are.

Or is it as ex-prime minister Tony Blair once famously said .....

    We're all middle class now.

Hmm, well that's all as clear as mud.

And yet it has to be more simple than the latest model that sociologists have come up with, doesn't it?

No longer upper, middle or working class it now seems we are one of seven groups.
    • Elite: This is the most privileged class in Great Britain who have high levels of all three capitals. Their high amount of economic capital sets them apart from everyone else.
    • Established Middle Class: Members of this class have high levels of all three capitals although not as high as the Elite. They are a gregarious and culturally engaged class.
    • Technical Middle Class: This is a new, small class with high economic capital but seem less culturally engaged. They have relatively few social contacts and so are less socially engaged.
    • New Affluent Workers: This class has medium levels of economic capital and higher levels of cultural and social capital. They are a young and active group.
    • Emergent Service Workers: This new class has low economic capital but has high levels of 'emerging' cultural capital and high social capital. This group are young and often found in urban areas.
    • Traditional Working Class: This class scores low on all forms of the three capitals although they are not the poorest group. The average age of this class is older than the others.
    • Precariat: This is the most deprived class of all with low levels of economic, cultural and social capital. The everyday lives of members of this class are precarious.

Young? Lets just leave it that I'm young at heart, shall we?

Active? More so mentally than physically but I guess they are getting more at politically and socially active etc.

Has medium levels of economic capital and higher levels of cultural and social capital? Not so sure about the medium levels of economic capital and, to be honest, I'm not 100% sure what they mean about higher levels of cultural and social capital but hey it sounds good.

Yes, according to THIS TESTon the BBC News website I'm of the New Affluent Worker class, what about you?

    OOH, PARDON MY PARONOMASIA!

    • By permitting ordinary folk to make light of their social betters without violating the norms of respect, where good humour abounds I seem to follow,
    • More of a tic than a trick, some regard me as a pathological condition whose sufferers are 'compulsive', 'inveterate' and 'unable to help themselves' whilst others, a sign of intellectual suppleness
    • Considered by some as irritating, by others as irrepressible, according to one psychologist I'm an admission of weakness, a release valve in which humour alleviates the stress of repressing unpleasant truths
    • Perhaps "a victorious assertion of the ego's invulnerability"
    • Viewed by some as a neat linguistic device which exploits the multiple meanings of words or phrases, I render lessons and concepts more vivid and memorable to listeners ......
    • Sometimes used to gain attention, I am used in advertising and slogans
    • I have been used by the likes of William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, the Roman playwright Platus and, even further back in history, I was used in ancient Egypt in the development of myths and the interpretation of dreams
    What am I?

"The use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more meanings or different associations, or of two or more words of the same or nearly the same sound with different meanings, so as to produce a humorous effect; a play on words," - Oxford English Dictionary.

"The use of words or phrases to exploit ambiguities and innuendoes in their meaning, usually for humorous effect" - Collins Dictionary.

Yes, I'm the pun also known as paronomasia. Considered by some as the lowest form of wit, here are some of my favourite 'punny' jokes.......

    • After periodic doubts about his vocational calling, the young chemistry teacher concluded he was out of his element.
    • Was Noel Coward afraid of traditional Christmas music?
    • Since I went to work in the plumbing department of the DIY store, I have developed a multi-fauceted personality disorder.
    • How did I get out of Iraq? Iran.
    • What do you call a good looking banana? Appeeling.
Care to share any of your favourite puns or are they unheard of in your part of the world?

    FIT FOR JURY SERVICE?

After a court case collapsed when its 12 jurors were dismissed by the judge who was worried about their grasp of the whole legal process I thought it would only be a matter of time before the jokes started.

Not one to let me down, my thanks to the friend who sent me this fun quiz which, doing the FaceBook rounds, some of you may already have seen.

    What is 'reasonable doubt'?
    A: I'm not sure
    B: I'm reasonably unsure
C: A doubt that is reasonable

What is the definition of guilt?
    A: Eyes too close together
    B: Shift-looking
C: Proven to have committed a crime

If the prosecution has failed to give enough evidence of a defendant's guilt, you should:
A: See what your friends on FaceBook think
B: Toss a coin to decide
C: Find the defendant not guilty

If the evidence is debatable, on what basis can you make an inference?
A: How fit (read as attractive, PW) the defendant looks
B: A sample of the defendant's hand writing
C: The full evidence put before the court

The guilt or innocence of a defendant is decided on:
    A: Whether he/she has a nice face
B: What you've read about him/her on the internet
C: Only the evidence presented in court

Under what circumstances may a jury be 'hung'?
A: The judge is really upset with them
B: If they fancy a night in a hotel
C: If, after an extended period of deliberation, they cannot agree on a verdict either unanimously or by a majority acceptable to the judge

What does a 'unanimous verdict' mean?
A: The opinion of an unknown person
    B: An unknown opinion
C: A verdict agreed by every member of the jury

    What is a 'majority verdict'?
A: The opinion held by most people on FaceBook/Twitter
B: The opinion of most people on FaceBook/Twitter aged over 18

Can a juror come to a verdict based on a reason not presented in court and which has no facts or evidence to support it?
    A: Yes
B: How much is it worth?
    C: Definitely not

Under what circumstances can you be excused, or defer, from jury service when summoned?
    A: I can't be bothered
    B: It doesn't pay enough
C: By law you must do jury service when requested BUT you can defer if for example you have an operation booked

Who can you discuss your jury deliberations with?
    A: Google
B: Family, friends, the person sitting next to you in the pub
C: Only other members of the jury and only in the jury room

    Your score:
Mostly A OR B: You could find yourself in the dock which incidentally is where those on trial stand AND NOT where you board a cruise ship
Mostly C: It would be helpful if you were available for jury service including any retrials in which the original jury had been dismissed thanks to their failing to grasp the legal process.
