WWW: FROM THE 15TH CENTURY TO 'PENDING INVESTIGATION'.

WWW OR for those in the know Wondrous Words Wednesday is a meme hosted by Kathy over at BermudaOnion's Weblog the aim of which is to encourage us to share, well, Wondrous Words on   .... (yeah!, you guessed) ... a Wednesday.

Today's words all coming from various FaceBook threads that I have read.

 * FORWALLOWED ... (15th century): wearied from tossing and turning in bed all night.

* LAGNIAPPE ... Chiefly Southern Louisiana and Southeast Texas: a small gift given with a purchase to a customer by way of compliment or for good measure; bonus, a gratuity or tip, an unexpected or indirect benefit.

* CONCUPISCENT ... A theological term for ardent, usually sensual, longing or lust for an object, person or experience.

* PLUVIOPHILE ... a lover of rain;someone who finds joy and peace of mind during rainy days.
(Please note ... Whilst not officially recognised this is listed on the Collins English dictionary website as 'Approval Pending Investigation')

Hmmm.....not sure why I'm unknown. Going to try again and see if your blog recognizes me. I know it's been awhile, but please tell me you haven't forgotten me! ;)

Given where I live, I did know Lagniappe... but all the others are new to me. I really like forwallowed and hope I can remember it to use sometime! I also like pluviophile.

Of course I have forgotten you Terri - how could I? This happened to me a few weeks ago and likewise I wasn't sure as to why I wasn't being recognised. Anyway, glad you stopped by.

Yes, I like forwallowed Kelly though I can't say I enjoyed the fact that I seemed to spend last night forwallowing(???).

I knew lagniappe because we used to go to a restaurant called Louisiana Lagniappe. Thanks for playing along!

I have a friend who is a PLUVIOPHILE, and so that particular word is familiar to me. The first two I don't think I've come across before now.

I particularly like this collection of words. I was not previously familiar with any of them before. I think that my favorite is “lagniappe”.

Okay! so you scored 4 out of 4 today with me and with some excellent words!

Given this horrendous heat again this week, the idea of becoming a pluviophile is quite appealing.

Consequently, and like yourself, I have spent the last few nights forwallowing, and I am totally wiped out and tired beyond tired!

I had one word prepared, but just didn't get around to publishing this time, so perhaps another one will pop up in time for next week!

Thanks for sharing such great new words :)

My association with the word concupiscent:
First stanza of "The Emperor of Ice-Cream" BY WALLACE STEVENS
"Call the roller of big cigars,
The muscular one, and bid him whip
In kitchen cups concupiscent curds.
Let the wenches dawdle in such dress
As they are used to wear, and let the boys
Bring flowers in last month's newspapers.
Let be be finale of seem.
The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream.

A great poem!

Tracy,
I was not familiar with any of these
words. But forwallowed and pluviophile
are my favourites.

Who knew that Facebook could be a source of vocabulary words?! My favorites here are forwallowed and pluvoiphile, although I wouldn't mind getting a lagniappe every now and then. Great words this week!
