ROFL 2016.

Know what day it is today?

No, it's not International Fairy Day. You were thinking of last Friday's post.

Try again, I'll give you a clue ...

Wibble ....

Yes, of course it is, its ...

which brings me to ...

Have you heard the one about the team of 'experts' who using a computer to generate thousands of made-up words have uncovered the reason why nonsense words make us laugh?

No? How about the one about the group of scientists who have figured out the  top ten funniest jokes according to science?

I jest you not, people actually spent time researching these things.

Hmm!

Whilst I'm not sure these 'top ten' jokes would make my list of favourites (though I do like the one about the snail) a group of scientists have claimed they are the ten funniest jokes - ever - and so it must be true.

Perhaps less cerebral than the undergraduates of the London School of Economics on whom the researchers 'experimented' with jokes such as ...

A guy dies and is sent to hell.
Satan meets him, shows him doors to three rooms, and says he must choose one to spend eternity in.
In the first room, people are standing in dirt up to their necks.
The guy says, ‘No, let me see the next room.’
In the second room, people are standing in dirt up to their noses.
Guy says no again.
Finally Satan opens the third room where people are standing with dirt up to their knees, drinking coffee and eating pastries.
The guy says, ‘I pick this room.’
Satan says OK and starts to leave, and the guy wades in and starts pouring some coffee.
On the way out Satan yells, ‘OK, coffee break’s over. Everyone back on your heads!’ ...

And yet, it would seem, arguably more cerebral than the group of students who found words like those below funny ...

  • 'blablesoc'
  • 'flingam'
  • 'whook'
  • and, back to that old favourite, 'wibble'
whilst rejecting ...

  • 'tatinse'
  • 'retsits'
  • 'tessina'
  • 'turth'
  •  'suppect'.

Soooo, what does make me laugh?

Well, there are jokes like these or how about these from International Joke Day 2012 or the ones below that I've recently added to my Pinterest page?

I love a good pun and the sillier and more groan-worthy, the better.

Love both the cartoons at the end of your post. :D

Such a good post and that pirate joke is brilliant! I love punny, silly jokes, they're the best. Also, blablesoc, what an amazing word. - Tasha

You found some very interesting stories this week.

As for the funniest jokes, I thought that "Racing a bear" was the best.

I think I'm the only person who never found Blackadder funny. Sigh. And wibble doesn't make me laugh either. I'm more of an Ab Fab and Miranda Hart fan myself. :D

Is this why my daughter was telling us jokes all day on the 1st? :-) I didn't understand half of them (she makes them up--and there a bit like the shaggy dog joke--you've heard of that one, yes? It goes on and on and on with no end in sight), but we have to laugh because she's having such fun telling them.

Glad that you all like my ode to international Joke Day. I admit that like many of you it was the pirate/mole joke that had me laughing most.

And whilst confessing, I'll let you into a secret LL Cool Joe..... I'm by no means a big fan of Blackadder either, I just thought the video clip fitted in well. Not that I'm a fan of Ab Fab either, Miranda Hart I find vaguely more humorous. A Welsh comedian called Rob Gilbert is my favourite at the moment. Check him out if you can though be warned his accent may well leave some puzzled.

Glad to hear the day was celebrated in style by your daughter Literary Feline. I'm not certain I know the Shaggy Dog joke though.

Hi Tracy,

I must admit that I don't particularly enjoy sitcoms and it does take quite a lot to make me laugh. Anything that makes me cringe and wish the floor would open up under me, is a definite one to avoid.

Similarly, my nieces can quite happily sit and watch films which have comedy elements, although I really do struggle to see what there is to laugh at.

Your joke about Satan was more to my liking, so stand-up comedians such as Ross Noble, Rhod Gilbert and Peter Kay I currently quite enjoy. Come to think of it, I did enjoy one sitcom, Peter Kay's 'Car Share'

Nice Post :)
