LOVE POEMS.

LOVE POEMS by CAROL ANN DUFFY.

BACK COVER BLURB: Whether writing of longing or seduction, of passion, adultery, or simple, everyday acts of love, Carol Ann Duffy perfectly captures the truth of each experience. Love Poems contains some of her most popular poems and, always imaginative, heartfelt and direct, displays all the eloquence and skill that have made her one of the foremost poets of her time.

SOURCE: A World Book Night read.

MY THOUGHTS: OK, so its true to say that I prefer my poetry read to me rather than by me (no big secret to regular readers of Pen and Paper I know) and of all the poetry out there love poems are probably way up there as my least favourite. And then there's the fact that I don't generally rate Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy's poetry BUT, taken as a whole, I actually found myself quite enjoying this collection - some poems more than others of course.

A collection from works already published. I'm guessing romance poetry afficionados and perhaps fans of the author may well already have copies of the various poems even if they aren't all in one volume like this. However for those wishing a nice selection of varied love poems you could do worse than this selection of 34 poems.

Like you, romantic poetry does not rate high on my list. In fact, I'm so picky about poetry in general that I rarely buy poetry books by specific authors, leaning more towards anthologies.

I'm glad you found this one pleasing enough.

Hi Tracy,

I read 'Correspondents' and 'Warming Her Pearls' over at Amazon and must admit that I enjoyed the author's style of writing, although I don't really tend to read much poetry either.

A book of verse may be something I'll pick up, read one poem, then put the book back on the shelf until I remember it again, in a few weeks time!

The two poems I mentioned having read, are just about as romantic and 'slushy' as I would really want to get and are about the right length not to become boring or too wearisome.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts :)

I'm glad that you enjoyed this collection, Tracy! Maybe you will be reading Pablo Neruda next. ;)

I read a book of love haikus that was quite good, but I don't know if I'd want JUST love poems in general. Thanks for sharing - glad you liked it okay!

I think that I mentioned before that I think hearing poetry is just as valid, perhaps more so, them reading it.

With that, I do not read or listen to nearly enough of it.

This verse sounds very good. I have heard very positive things about Carol Ann Duffy.

I didn't know there were love poems regarding adultery. Interesting. If you like love poems, this sounds like a good collection.

I totally get why you like someone reading you poetry. There is something lyrical about it so it just makes sense.

I'll have to check this one out. Once in a while I get on a poetry kick. :)

Ah, Carol Ann Duffy always reminds me of school and takes me right back analysing her poems in English class. I used to love it, so I should try to pick up a copy of this at some point and get that nostalgia rush once more! - Tasha

So not new but intriguing for those who haven't read her work, not a bad idea, I suppose. I might have to look out for it as I've only read her Richard III poem so far.

Good that you liked it - that speaks of the variety, for sure!

Poetry is such a personal choice, even more so at times than good old fiction. I definitely understand the "read to versus reading" choice but glad it stood well nonetheless.
