A CHILD NAMED EEYORE?

Inspired by Carol's THE TOP 10 CHARACTERS (AND LITERARY FIGURES) THAT I'D NAME MY CHILDREN AFTER I thought that as I was obviously feeling negative at the time and could only come up with names I wouldn't call my children (Bella, Jacob and Edward) I'd run with the idea and post my own top 10 here.

And so, in no particular order, I give you .......

  • Eeyore : No, you're right. No matter that he is my favourite literary donkey of all times it would be cruel of me to call a child this.
  • Philippa : After? You guessed, one of my favourite writers of historical fiction, Philippa Gregory.
  • Lily Rose: As a girl I loved reading of the adventures of The Family From One End Street by Eve Garnett and soooo wanted to be like Lily Rose whose good deeds didn't always turn out quite as she planned.
  • Arwen : (Meaning Noble Maiden) The most beautiful of the last generation of High-Elves in Middle Earth. Named for Husband dearest whose favourite book is JRR Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings. Well, we couldn't exactly name them Bilbo or Gandalf.
  • Mitch : For Mitch Albom who wrote The Five People You Meet In Heaven which is one of my all time favourite books.
  • Charlie : From the novel Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes as so many of the issues raised by Charlie's story are close to my heart.
  • Charlotte : One of my favourite names plus I love Charlotte's Web by EB White.
  • Ellen: Another of my all time favourite books is Ken Follett's The Pillars Of the Earth, Ellen is my favourite character. A healer who relies on her instincts and education, her independent spirit and certainty about the validity of her own lifestyle keep her from being broken by those who think her evil.
  • Dorian: Dorian as in 'the' Dorian of Oscar Wilde's The Picture Of Dorian Gray? Yes, that Dorian. A bit of an odd choice I know BUT I think the whole premise of the book should act as a reminder to those who come to believe that beauty is the only worthwhile aspect of life.
  • Michael: In honour of Michael Cooper who wrote The Pebbles Go To Town which was the first book I ever bought.

Great list.
Maybe Eeyore could be a middle name :)

Mitch is a good choice ;)

Have a great weekend!

Funny that while some of those names meant nothing to me, the ones that did brought up the exact folks that you admire. I can't say I'd name any kids after them but that's such a personal thing anyway. But I have to say that Philippa is one of my least favourite names. Maybe it requires a British accent to pull it off, I don't know but it just doesn't flow easily off my tongue. Or maybe it's because I've never met any Philippas. Lots of Philips though. 3 in various branches of the family who are themselves, entirely unrelated. Funny that.

Nice list, I like the name Dorian.

I laughed at your "non" choices from Twilight. One of my dogs is named Alice and I do love the name Jasper.

This is a great idea and I would have to give it far more thought to come up with a full list. Years ago, when I read "Out of the Silent Planet" by C.S. Lewis (first in his space trilogy), I thought it would be fun to name a child/pet after the central character Dr. Ransom.

If I had a girl instead of a boy, I was going to fight to the death to name her Charlotte after the very same book.

Agree that maybe Eeyore would make a better middle name. Would be better than naming the child Pooh! *L*

So many books, so little time said...

I actually really like Arwen and I have never met anyone called it yet (or Eeyore for that matter) :P

I love the name Dorian! And I totally agree that I would stay far far away from Bella, Edward and Jacob

Yeah, Jacob, Edward, and Bella have pretty much been ruined for me . . .

I have to confess the only one I could recognize on your list was Charlotte but hey all information you are sharing here is good for future reading reference. Keep writing Petty.

Great list. I do know a man whose name should be Eyeore, but alas of course it isn't. Lily Rose is such a pretty name.

I had planned on using Arwen as one of the three names if we would have had a girl (yes, my children have two middle names). Now I plan someday to name a future cat Arwen. We adopted a kitten earlier this year and I named her Arya Snow after two characters in The Game of Thrones. Michael is always a good choice. =O) My dad's name, my half brother's name, I'm named the female version of it (after my dad), my husband's middle name is Michael (and he actually goes by Mike) and his dad's middle name is Michael. So, of course, one of my oldest son's middle names is also Michael.

I love your in memory slideshow of your pets. Such beloved memories. Do you have any pets now? You should stop by Cat Thursday on my blog.

Had to pop back in because I see your name is Tracy. My sister's name...and spelled exactly the same!
