PRISM.

PRISM by FAYE KELLERMAN and ALIZA KELLERMAN.

Kaida Hutchendson isn't exactly psyched for the class trip to Carlsbad Caverns. Fourteen hours in a van with preppy jock Zeke Anderson and high-school loner Joy Tallon? No, thank you.

But when a tragic and explosive accident turns the journey into a nightmare, Kaida would give anything to be back on the road. Stumbling at midnight through the unforgiving desert, Kaida, Zeke, and Joy take refuge in an abandoned cave ..... until the world goes from pitch-black to blinding. The next thing Kaida knows, she's back home in California and everything is just as it was before the Carlsbad trip ever took place.

Or is it?

Increasingly unnerved by the distorted world around her, Kaida starts receiving unexpected help from mysterious people. Soon she must band together with Zeke and Joy to try to make it back to the reality she remembers .... and to survive the one she's fallen into.
........ Inner front cover.

FIRST SENTENCE (Chapter 1): I always half-believed that Fridays could make me fly.

MEMORABLE MOMENT (Page 31): Screams are like strings. Sometime they're thick and fat, sturdy and strong. Sometimes they're thinner and braided like yarn. And sometimes they're like sewing thread, so skinny that they barely withstand any pressure before snapping. Joy had covered the full range of screams ......

KEEP IT OR NOT?: Definitely a book to be kept.

Obviously a talented family with four writers in the family, mother, Faye, father, Jonathan, son, Jesse and now daughter, Aliza.

Prism is a debut teen novel written by mother and daughter and it has to be said is an impressive read - definitely one of my favourite books this year. Not typical of its 'teen' genre, there are no angels, no werewolves, no vampires and very little in the way of romance or teenage angst, it made a refreshing change to read this novel which I have to say I find difficult to fully categorise as it is part science fiction and, I guess, part mystery and part suspense.

Hmm, how to review Prism without giving any of the plot away?  Actually I think I'll let the inner cover blurb speak for itself, it's probably safest that way.

Not something I often comment on but I feel I have to mention the cover of the book as, though it isn't clear from the illustration, the pieces of the prism stand slightly proud of the rest of the cover which, combined with the smoothness of the pieces, really does give the illusion of shattered glass.

Ok, onto the story. Very cleverly written and psychologically scary, Prism, though not without action, was not as fast paced as I had expected but was much more intelligent and whilst certain aspects did not always make complete sense I was so caught up in the plot as a whole that this didn't seem to matter.

The characters I also really enjoyed and found it interesting that the authors chose not to include any 'baddies' as such when it would have been so easy to do so.

Left open for a sequel I'm really looking forward to finding out what happens next.

Purchased with an Amazon voucher won at BookQquoter's site, A THOUSAND BOOKS WITH QUOTES,  Prism is the 46th book read in the 100+ Reading Challenge.

I've read the Dad's book but no one elses. How neat to have a mother-daughter collaboration ... and to have it be so good.

I've not read any of the Kellermans, but this one certainly tempts me!! I just don't think I should get caught up in yet another series, though.
