WOLFSANGEL.

WOLFSANGEL by LIZA PERRAT.

Source: Received for review from the author.

Seven decades after German troops march into her village, Céleste Roussel is still unable to assuage her guilt.

1943. German soldiers occupy provincial Lucie-sur-Vionne, and as the villagers pursue treacherous schemes to deceive and swindle the enemy, Céleste embarks on her own perilous mission as her passion for a Reich officer flourishes.

When her loved ones are deported to concentration camps, Céleste is drawn into the vortex of this monumental conflict, and the adventure and danger of French Resistance collaboration.

As she confronts the harrowing truths of the Second World War's darkest years, Céleste is forced to choose: pursue her love for the German officer, or answer General de Gaulle's call to fight for France.

Her fate suspended on the fraying thread of her will, Celeste gains strength from the angel talisman bequeathed to her through her lineage of healer kinswomen. But the decision she makes will shadow the remainder of her days.

A woman's unforgettable journey to help liberate Occupied France, Wolfsangel is a stirring portrayal of the courage and resilience of the human mind, body and spirit.
...... Outer back cover.

FIRST SENTENCE (Céleste Primrose: 8th June 2012): We gather in the cemetery, before the ossuary, with the straggle of other remaining survivors and their families.

MEMORABLE MOMENT (Page 237): Many of suitcases gaped open, the contents spilled out onto the tracks in a muddle of dirty clothes, single shoes, books, a child's doll - its china face cracked and dirt stained. The bags and items littered the ground over a wide area, surely many more things than from one single trainload of people. Much of it was sodden and flattened, as if it had been sitting there for days.

MY THOUGHTS: Having had the honour of reading and reviewing Spirit of Lost Angels last year it was a privilege to receive a copy of Wolfangel, the second book in the L'Auberge des Anges series.

A series revolving around an angel talisman passed down through the generations by the women of the Inn of Angels. Though this has all of the qualities that made Spirit of Lost Angels such a good read it is a quite different novel in that it sees the now occupied village of Lucie-sur-Vionne a hotbed of resistance during World War II. Our heroine (Céleste) a feisty young woman determined to do her bit even if she is in love with a man who could compromise all she is fighting for and indeed the very lives of those she holds dear.

Another confident and obviously well researched novel from this talented author. A heart wrenching, moving and yet essentially life affirming story based around actual events with a myriad of strong women at its heart. Wolfsangel is a novel of such epic proportions, Liza Perrat's writing so powerful, her descriptions so vivid that it will stay with me for a long, long time. I only hope we don't have to wait another year for the next instalment.

Lovely to read that you enjoyed this one Tracy. I was pleased to have the chance to read and review Spirit of Lost Angels too and I have this one to be read, I am looking forward to it even more now, in particular the resistance aspects.

Your review makes this sound very good. I might wait until the series is complete before beginning it, though.

Turns out the price on both books was decent (and I still had birthday money) so they are waiting for me in my Kindle. Thanks for the recommendation.

Hi Tracy,

It seems as though you have just read the best book in a long time, judging by that excellent and almost moving review.

The memorable words were very poignant and emotional and probably made Celeste's decision all the more difficult and heart-breaking. I do love the style of writing, although Liza is not an author I have come across before.

It does sound as though this is a series which needs to be read in order though, so perhaps I may try and get a deal on them all when the third one is published.

Thanks for sharing this great find and have a good weekend,

Yvonne

This is a very creative premise to base a series around around. This entry occurs during a very interesting time period.

I wonder what time period the next book will be set in.

This sounds like quite a book, Tracy, one I would probably like. I will have to see if I can get the first book in the series.

I can't even imagine what it must have been like for Celeste--being in love with the enemy and fighting in the resistance.
