First seen over HERE at the Bookworm's site I thought I'd share some of my bookish peeves with you.
#1......
#2 ...... I so agree with Naida and her Non-readers peeve but with me it isn't so much the non-readers but the so-called 'celeb' authors out there who brag about the fact that they've never read a book .
#3 ...... And as for 'The book loaned to a friend that comes back ruined'. Is there any greater book crime out there? Possibly not but just a great a peeve of mine is the library book with the turned down corners or, horror of horrors, the coffee stained pages.
#4 ...... The books known by more than one title. Having checked to see I didn't already have this book by one of my favourite authors, Husband dearest was delighted to present me with a copy only to discover I already had a copy ..... only with a different title and cover.
And talking of covers ....
#5 ...... The children's books which are also available with an adult cover. Who do you think you are kidding? Everyone knows these are children's books, publishing them in a more adult friendly cover fools no-one.
Or how about ....
#6 ...... The perfect specimens that grace so many a book cover. You know the sort, the 'kick ass heroine who in actuality could hardly walk in those heels/breathe in that corset let alone kick ass.
#7 ...... Ah Naida, the E-book V Print copy Debate. Those who tell me I'm a dinosaur for preferring tree-books. Each to their own I say.
#8 ...... The Foot Note. A necessary evil or a useful tool? Whichever way you look at it I personally prefer my 'foot note' to be in an appendix at the back of the book rather than at the bottom of the page.
#9 ...... Those who malign those who buy their books from online sites rather than a local independent book shop. OK, so in an ideal world I'm sure many of us would love to support our local book shop more but with money so tight for so many of us I'm afraid finances play a large part in just where we purchase our books and sad (but true) to say such sites are generally the less expensive option.
#10 ...... Those who pretend they have read books such as Tolstoy's War And Peace in order to appear intelligent. Hard to believe I know but THIS recent survey claimed over half of us - 52 per cent - display books at home that we have never read. The most popular books to brag about being George Orwell’s 1984, followed by Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations.
So, what are your 10 pet book peeves?

Top peeve is celeb books, usually ghost written. I have come across one or two that I have enjoyed but steer clear of them these days.

I do get uneasy when I'm reading and people think I'm lazing around. Funny thing about War and Peace: one of my university lecturers said most of those who claimed to have read War & Peace really meant they'd read the first page of W&P. As for Great Expectations, I did enjoy it. The story is as good as the author's name was prestigious. One pet peeve I can think of now is beginning authors or celeb authors 'cute-sifying' their characters in children's books, or turning their selfishness over to generosity and kindness within the flip of a page.
You have quite a few on here that I totally agree with, especially #4! Often this is due to a UK release vs a US release, but sometimes they just decide to re-release a book for the heck of it and that drives me crazy!
#4 bugs me to no end as well. At least keep the same title!
I prefer physical books for some things. I can lend or give my book to another after I read it and you can't do that with a digital book in the same way. :)
that's hilarious that people pretend to have read classics. for the three you mentioned, I haven't read any. LOL
I love physical books the best too. To each their own I say!
Interesting list as always Tracey. Hard to believe there are people who mention books they have never read and that there are books with multiple title/cover...
Glad to be back here at your blog home!
I've stoppped lending books to anyone other than my parents now. I tend to give other people books (once that I know I won't read again). Too many times I've had books go missing, not returned or returned damaged.
Great list Tracy! We do have quite a few of the same bookish pet peeves. How funny that people actually pretend to have read a book in order to seem smarter. How would they be able to discuss said books then?
And I totally agree, as nice as it is to support local indie book shops, it's not always do-able due to prices. The perfect specimens on covers is also a good one. Nobody can look like that.
Thanks for sharing your bookish pet peeves!
Interruptions are the worst. Especially when I'm so so so close to the end. That seems to be when I get interrupted the most.
As for your #3 - It's one thing when it's your own book, but treat others' books (library books included) with respect, please.
Great list, Tracy!
Great list!
The one I take exception to however is footnotes. I love footnotes! :) I usually find them very interesting and I find them so much easier when they are at the bottom of the page.
Hi Tracy , great list, I don,t lend books out any more, selfish I know ,but they are only to borrow not for keeps people don't realise this , the times I,ve had to ask for a book back and I know it's not been read
Great talking to you on FB will do it again sometime
Excellent list! I only lend out books I don't want back, as so many people seem to "forget" to return them so why set myself up for disappointment?
And I've never understood people who brag that they don't read. Why brag that you're a moron?
Books with more than one title are a huge pet peeve of mine! Why oh why do publishers do this???
Hi Tracy,
I agree with just about al of your list, I couldn't have put it better myself.
Number 4 is an interesting one, as I have come across several books which have been published twice, with different titles and different covers and it really winds me up. I was talking to one of the culprit authors a short while ago and she was at pains to point out that it was the publishers and distributors in the various countries, who actually demand the changes, to take into account the vagaries of the local markets.
The publishers should be shot in that case, do they really think that the readers in different countries can't understand a book, without the title being changed ... and what I wonder, is their reasoning behind changing the cover?
Great post, really interesting and thanks for sharing your answers.
Yvonne
great list! i agree with just about all of your list; particularly #4 and #5 bug me to no end, too.
big hugs~
xx
#9 I'm surprised dearest that in your comments on local bookstore usage that you haven't mentioned that most book shops are utterly inaccessible to anyone in a wheelchair. The really small independents just fill every bit of floor space with stock and even the big chaps like Waterstones don't leave much room to get around in and/or require use of the goods lift to get to other floors.
