Emily is five-years-old. She wears pink ballerina shoes and wants to be a ballerina when she grows up.
Emily’s mummy and daddy are both special police officers called detectives. Lately, Emily has noticed that her mummy hasn’t been spending time with her. She has stopped taking her to dancing lessons and her older brother, Jackson, to his rugby lessons. One night, Emily sees her mummy crying on the sofa being comforted by her daddy. At a family meeting Emily learns that her mummy is poorly with something that the doctor calls Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Mummy Wears Blue Shoes is a heart-warming story about a family who are living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is a story written about a family, for families by a family, by author Scott Furlong with illustrated by his cousin Emma Cahill ... BOOK SYNOPSIS

Emily is 5 years old and has long brown curly hair all the way to the middle of her back ... FIRST SENTENCE (Page un-numbered)

Feeling sad and upset Emily snuck off down the hallway back to her bed. As Emily walked off, daddy saw something sparkle out of the corner of his eye.

It was Emily wearing her ballerina shoes ... MEMORABLE MOMENT (Page un-numbered)

MY THOUGHTS ... That the edition I received was in need of a thorough editing something I hope will be rectified but overall what I thought was a worthy read.

A great premise ...

A lover of books since before I can remember (rumour has it that I was born with a paperback in my hand) what I cannot remember is books that dealt with issues such as this.

Not that this is to say that the idyllic lives featured in so many of the books that I read as a child don't have a part to play in today's children's literature ... because they do ... but its good to see that books featuring the issues that effect so many children also have a part to play.

What I felt was a great introduction to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), sensitively and simply approached and therefore suitable for young children; I thought Mummy Wears Blue Shoes a good choice for families wishing to explore what could be a difficult topic, that it opens the way for further discussion is to be applauded.

Characters you can relate to ...

I loved the books of that formed my childhood reading (I still do) but whilst I could imagine and even hope to live the lives of the children so typical of these books they weren't necessarily lives I could relate to thus I liked that this picture book typified many modern families and the way that they live; both parents working, the children enjoying after school activities (Emily ballet, her brother, Jackson, rugby), the grandparents providing a much needed support system being things many of today's children will relate to.

SUMMED UP IN A SENTENCE ... A good introduction to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, sensitively done for young readers.

Sounds like a book that would be quite helpful to some and written by someone who carries the right credentials for the subject.

This one does have a very meaningful premise and I hope the editing does come through on it as suggested by your review.

This looks like a good way for the young ones to learn a little bit about Post Traumatic Stress disorder.
Great post.

This sounds like a good and important book. I agree that children’s books do need to tacks serious issues some of the time.

I think it's good that there are books available for children now on sensitive topics like this. Life can be hard, and kids need to know there are ways to deal with it.

I think books like this can be such valuable resources. Hopefully the final copy will be cleaned up a bit. This sound like a great one!

I don't think I've ever heard of a children's book that focuses on this topic, so I love that. It's definitely something that a lot of moms deal with -- even if they've had kids and everything was "fine" after that, so I love that this is being talked about and in a format for kids to better understand.
