6 DEGREES OF SEPARATION #17: ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE.

A bit late with this month's meme as hosted by Annabel so without further ado I bring you November's book ...

A beautiful, stunningly ambitious novel about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of WWII

- For full synopsis click here.

Though not a book I have read for me Anthony Doerr's All The Light We Cannot See conjures up ...

#1 WOLFSANGEL: The sequel to Liza Perret's The Spirit Of Lost Angels (you'll be pleased to know there is a third book, Blood Rose Angel, that I'll be reading/reviewing as soon as my copy arrives) this is another story of forbidden love between a French girl and an officer of the Third Reich as the villages of  Lucie-sur-Vionne pursue treacherous schemes to swindle the enemy whilst Céleste embarks on her own perilous mission, her strength gained from a stone angel talisman passed down through the generations, as her passion flourishes.

#2 ANGEL OF BROOKLYN: From the stone talisman angel passed down through the generations to Beatrice, the Angel of Brooklyn. An 'American war bride', a former Coney Island show girl, brought to England, who when the men head off to fight in the Great War slowly becomes an object of suspicion and jealousy for the women left behind.

#3 THE RAGING QUIET: The story of Marnie, another woman looked upon with suspicion and jealousy, who arrives in Torcurra to find the villagers whipping the devil out of a 'mad' boy. A tale of friendship, love and determination set in a time when 'Witch' was an accusation thrown at anyone deemed to be other than the 'norm'.

#4 SILENT BOY: Mad? Bad? Or simply a badly 'damaged' child? Silent Boy is the true story of Kevin, also known as Zoo Boy because of his barricading himself under tables between chair legs, and a teacher determined not to give up on this 'lost case'.

#5: WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN: Read pre Pen and Paper (find the synopsis here). Another Kevin, another 'unlovable' adolescent who murdered several of his fellow students, a cafeteria worker and a teacher. One of the most disturbing and powerful books I've ever read and possibly one of the most talked about books at my reader's group.

#6 THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN: Another pre Pen and Paper read (synopsis here). Though completely different, indeed in many ways the polar opposite of the above book, this, the story of an elderly caretaker who goes to Heaven where he meets five people who were unexpectedly instrumental in his life, is nevertheless one of the most powerful books I have ever read.

A monthly meme (normally we post the first Saturday of the month) hosted by Annabel and Emma. 6 Degrees Of Separation invites readers to link six books according to whatever connections come to mind.

Hosted by Emma next month, December's book is Us by David Nicholls.

For once, I've actually read the starting book (and loved it!)

Glad to know about the third Liza Perret book. I already have the first two and will definitely wait to read them once I have the third.

#5 sounds fascinating. Perhaps my book club would enjoy it, as well.

Hi Tracy,

I already have your book of the month and your first link-up title, on my 'Want To Read' list.

However, after seeing 'Wolfsangel' featured, I do feel rather guilty about just how long I have had both this and 'Spirit Of Lost Angels' on my TBR pile, as it really has been an age since author Liz Perret first contacted me!

'Angel Of Brooklyn' looks like another worthy addition to the list and the linking of those three books in the context of the post, is really well researched and interesting ... Thank You :)

Have a great weekend,

Yvonne

We Need to Talk About Kevin is a powerful novel indeed, I remember reading it and being completed absorbed into it - it's so good but very dark! - Tasha

You choices remind me pf how compelling a certain kind of story is to us. That is, the Kind of story that is a romance between individuals of waring parties.

Such an interesting jump from We Need to Talk About Kevin to The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Tracy . . .

I am trying to remember if I have read Silent Boy. I have read several of Hayden's books--one of her books actually helped me decide to pursue a career in social work (One Child) and so it has a special place in my heart. (I agree though, her books are all so similar they start to sound the same after awhile).
