LOVEFILM: MARCH '15.

DELIVERY MAN...

Not without its thought provoking moments but billed as a comedy I'm afraid for me it failed to deliver. TT

Vince Vaughan as the feckless boyfriend and meat market delivery man who is going nowhere fast discovers that an earlier money-making livelihood as a sperm donor is about to come back to him. The sperm bank having been rather liberal with his donations, he is now the biological dad to 553 children and a quarter of them are suing to find their dad. Not beleaguered with as many onanistic jokes as I had feared, quite a touching little film on the importance of relationships and knowing where you come from. NJT

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES...

Having enjoyed the previous film in the franchise, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, I sat down really looking forward to this. With an intelligent story line, amazing CGI that thankfully did not detract from this (an all too common complaint of mine) and apes depicting both the very worst and best of humanity I was not to be disappointed. TT

Part 2 of the prequel series, human beings now exist only in small numbers scattered around the globe. The genetically modified apes who escaped to the forests ten years previously have prospered and are happy in their seclusion until a few of the remaining people stumble into their patch. Much to reflect on, on territory, leadership, mediation and the possibilities and the challenges for difference to survive alongside each other, particularly in the face of deep-seated animosities and scarcity of resources. GOD'S NOT DEAD...

Christians = good; atheists = bad; Muslim men = even worse and that's to say nothing of the ending. Christian propaganda at its worst. Never have I been so incensed watching a film.  TT

Ok... conservative evangelical propaganda, nuff said. NJT

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL...

An odd, little gem of a film in which quick witted dialogue combined with a wonderful visual presence assure that not only does it grab the attention from the start but holds it throughout. TT

"The plot thickens - as they say... why? Is it a soup metaphor?", Yes, yes, yes... very entertaining and cleverly constructed, author narrated story. Featuring a host of actors in little more than cameo roles., other than Mr. Feinnes as the redoubtable M. Gustave whose adventures are here related and Willem Dafoe as the nasty hatchet man. A delicious confection of cinematography and scenery, outrageous characters and plot, lurching from delicious punishing dialogue insults to Keystone cops action. It's not a hotel, it's a way of mind. We've watched two of those you have listed here... at least I don't think I've seen that particular Planet of the Apes. (if not, I want to)

Even as a Christian, I thought there was a lot "wrong" with God's Not Dead. It's redeeming factor for me was the "apologetics" used in their debate.

I'm afraid my husband and I weren't as enamored of The Grand Budapest Hotel as everyone else (include the Academy of Motion Pictures, given it was nominated for Best Picture). While we did enjoy it, we felt the funniest parts were all used in the previews and trailers.

It's always fun to compare notes here!

I was never interested in God's Not Dead. I thought Delivery Man was cute overall, but not something I need to see again. I am curious about the french film it's based on though. And I REALLY want to see The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Sad to say that I haven't seen any of these films, but really enjoy reading your sometimes dueling reviews!

I have the DVD of The Grand Budapest Hotel and hope to watch it this long weekend. As for Planet of the Apes, I did enjoy the first, but thought the second was ... not great. (It was the scenes of apes gone wild with machine guns that didn't do it for me ...)

I have yet to see the Grand Budapest Hotel but I will hopefully see it very soon.

I saw the first of this Planet of the Apes series and it was very good. But I miss Charleston Heston:)

I keep meaning to watch The Grand Budapest Hotel.

All we've watched on Lovefilm lately is Season 1 of Angel.

I really want to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the trailer looked amazing and I loved the first film. I also need to see The Grand Budapest Hotel as I've heard a lot of good things. I'm glad I found your blog again as I had a big blog clear out a while ago and lost your link, so am glad to be back! - Tasha

Let's see, no interest in the first, the second always creeps me out, the third earns a "meh", but the fourth has been on my to watch list for a while. Great post!

I got The Grand Budapest Hotel for Christmas. Haven't watched it yet, but Moonrise Kingdom was such a sleeper hit that I wanted to get this most recent film.
Could not watch the new Apes movies. The CGI on the apes is just too frightening realistic for my taste. And the main ape, sorry his name eludes me momentarily, had such a evil, psychotic gleam to it. The last one I saw was the Tim Burton movie.
