COMING HOME.

Book Three read for this years Christmas Reading Challenge (Details on the right side-bar): Mistletoe level.

6780501COMING HOME (Also released as Coming Home ... For Christmas) by PATRICIA SCANLAN.

FIRST SENTENCE {Chapter One}: A bitingly chill wind blew in off the East River and hailstones sharp as wasp stings peppered Alison Dunwoody's upraised face as she took one last look at the apartment she'd called home for the past three years.

MEMORABLE MOMENT {Page 61}: It was like the house breathed life again as childish voices filled the air and laughter and chat and their happy singing and innocent joyfulness infused the brick and mortar.

MY THOUGHTS: One of the surprise reads of the year. One of those heart warming books. Insubstantial when all is said and done but still a nice festive read.

A contemporary story that though the latter half is set in Ireland is largely set in a recession hit America. A nostalgic read in that though modern (there is mention of 9/11 and Obama) it took you back to a time when computers and games consoles etc for children weren't the norm making it essentially a gentle story of the importance and power of family ties with a romantic sub-plot.

Hi Tracy,

I have only read one of Patricia's early books and can remember thoroughly enjoying it. I am sure that 'Apartment 3B' had quite a substantial storyline, which makes 'Coming Home' sound a little shallow, although I guess if this one is specifically aimed at the Christmas story market, it has to have that 'feel good' factor, or folks wouldn't buy it!

I don't tend to read seasonal stories for that very reason, but I am pleased to see that you have achieved your reading goal of 125 books this year, it puts me to shame!

Yvonne.
