BRIDGET JONES 'NOT QUITE CRINGEWORTHY ENOUGH' FOR BAD SEX AWARD?

"Oh, oh," I gasped."Did they teach you this in the SAS?"
- Bridget Jones to an ex-army officer.

So, author Helen Fielding's latest Bridget Jones novel, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, has failed to make the shortlist of this years coveted Literary Review's Bad Sex Awards.

What has made it then?

Well,

With phrases such as ......

"her body melted into a single note of music to the sky"

earning American singer and author Woody Guthrie a posthumous nomination, others up for the award include ......
  • The Last Banquet by Jonathan Grimwood
  • Motherland by William Nicholson
  • The City of Devi by Manil Suri
  • The Victoria System by Eric Reinhardt
  • My Education by Susan Choi
  • Secrecy by Rupert Thomson
and my favourite ....

“breath became a moan as endorphinergic and morphinergic mechanisms spluttered into life”
- The World Was All Before Them by Matthew Reynolds.

Tracy;
Enjoyed your blog today.
The little bunnies remind me of this last weekend when my son visited with his 5 and 3 year old daughters.
My wife read the older one a children's book that we recently obtained. What a cute image of Madison and my wife cuddled up on our couch. Her sister wasn't interested to be read to.

I must admit I like the "her body melted into a single note of music to the sky" a bit, but that last one is pretty bad. LOL!

Hi Tracy,

I think I agree that your choice is probably the most obscure, as most people probably wouldn't have any idea what was going on here.

Some of the others were just a notch above pornographic and whilst I am by no means a prude, I found the Woody Guthrie nomination completely nauseating!

I do try to avoid too many books with explicit sex scenes, in the same way that I tend to avoid films and television programmes in the same vein.

This is one awards ceremony that I don't mind missing out on!

I clicked on the link and read/skimmed the entries. They are very, very funny.

I am not certain, but the passage from Secrecy by Rupert Thomson may be making fun of itself.

Too funny.
And you know, I read Bridget Jones Diary twice, but have no inclination to read any of the other books in the series.

I...I....I don't even know what to say about these. *-* Fun post? Yes. Suggestions for additional winners? I shall refrain.
