THE GOAT WOMAN OF SMACKOVER: AN ARKANSAS LEGEND.

THE GOAT WOMAN OF SMACKOVER: AN ARKANSAS LEGEND by RAMONA WOOD.

SOURCE: A gift from my good blogger buddy Kelly who hails from Arkansas. Thanks Kelly.

She lived in a circus truck for over 50 years.

Some said she was a great musical talent--a celebrity. Others saw a recluse who tended goats by day and roamed the streets of Smackover by night. Who was she?

The Goat Woman of Smackover shows how one girl refused to be crushed by broken dreams.
..... Book description, CHILDREN'S BOOKS BY RAMONA WOOD.

FIRST SENTENCE: There was once a little girl who wanted to be a star.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: The goats shuffled into the slick-floored studio for the early morning show. One of them clambered onto the piano to stand at attention while Rhena sang an elegant solo.

MY THOUGHTS: Recommended for those aged 4+. This is a children's book all about local Arkansas legend Rhena Salome Miller who, born in 1905, was known as the Goat Woman because of her many pet goats with whom, in her later years, she performed with on local television.

A wonderful story, simply told. With its delightful illustrations (also by the author) in which I saw something new every time I looked it makes perfect bedtime reading. A great introduction to the life of Rhena. As an adult my appetite was certainly whetted and I found myself reading more about this gloriously eccentric character.

So glad you enjoyed this, Tracy! I have vague memories of the Goat Woman from when I was a little girl. A fascinating lady, indeed!

Oh...and you may remember I posted photos of her home. If you look under my "Arkansas" tag you should easily find the entry.

That's quite a book title! I hadn't realised it was a children's book just by looking at the cover...

And I thought the part about living in a circus truck while tending goats and roaming the streets got me already. 'how one girl refused to be crushed by broken dreams' sounds really good, Tracy, really good.
