BONE CROSSED.

BONE CROSSED by PATRICIA BRIGGS.

SOURCE: Ex-library book stock.

Car mechanic and sometime shapeshifter Mercy Thompson has learned, the hard way, why her race was almost exterminated. When European vampires immigrated to North America, they found Mercy's people had a hidden talent - for vampire slaying. Unfortunately for Mercy, the queen of the local vampire seethe has discovered her true identity.

The undead queen is also furious when she learns Mercy has crossed her and killed one of her vampires. Mercy may be protected from direct reprisals by the werewolf pack (and her interesting relationship with its Alpha), but that just means Marsilia will come after Mercy some other way. So Mercy had better prepare to watch her back.
..... Outer back cover.

FIRST SENTENCE (Chapter 1): I stared at my reflection in the mirror.

MEMORABLE MOMENT (Page 201): "Witnessed," said the vampires. All of them. All at exactly the same time. Like puppets, only creepier.

MY THOUGHTS: With so many books being published under the banner of 'Urban Fantasy' I suppose its pretty hard to be totally original. And whilst Bone Crossed did contain some nice ideas - a werecoyote who suffers from panic attacks, a Snow Elf and an Oakman both of which were new to me - with its combination of werewolves, fae, ghosts and a vampire queen out for revenge it didn't have much new to offer as far as paranormal mysteries/romances go.

The first Mercedes Thompson book I've read though its the fourth in the series. Normally these books work well as standalone reads but (and I hope this makes sense) with Bone Crossed it didn't so much feel like there were merely references to previous events but that I'd opened a book and started reading in the middle of a story.

An average enough read, just not exceptional. This wasn't a novel that had me gripped me from the beginning though it did improve as the story progressed. I think my main disappointment however were the characters who featured briefly in the beginning never to be mentioned again. A shame when Mercy's pink glock toting, Doberman Pinscher owning mother sounded wonderful.

Vampires and such no longer interest me - loved them when I was a teen though. Today, the twists that have been made to the vampire nature are kind of irritating. Perhaps I'm just old.

Yes, a genre that I think I've had my fill of for the time being.

Sorry you didn't really enjoy this one, and it wasn't very good as a stand-alone. I want to try and read more urban fantasy though.

Ah, it sounds like it might be a better series to start at the beginning. Great review!

This series is best from the beginning. It makes sense with all the characters. I am behind on this one and so need to catch up.

Tracy, I can always count on you for an honest review. It doesn't sound like a good stand-alone book.

Hi Tracy,

You always tell it like it is, which makes your reviews so refreshing to read.

I have just been sent an 'urban fantasy' book to review and have to admit that I was a little reticent about accepting it, as it isn't one of my favourite genres. The author however, is very passionate about his subject and is convinced that I will change my mind after reading his story ... we shall see!

I also don't enjoy books which don't have a definitive ending. Anything which might as well have 'to be continued..' written at the end, isn't a story for me.

Sorry that this wasn't one of your favourite books, hope the next one is much better.

Yvonne.

I've only read the first in this series, as Mercy just didn't grab my attention for some reason. Please don't give up on urban fantasy, as it's my favorite genre! Try Julie Kagawa or Jennifer Estep, as they're both awesome writers you might enjoy!

I've read the first book and I even have the rest on my shelf but I haven't' gotten to them yet. This is a story arc though so you probably can't just jump in like other series unfortunately.

I used to love so many UF series years ago but it's all been written and it's hard to find a new take on things these days.

Without a doubt the modern concept of vampires is being over done. Based upon your description it sounds like the Vampires are actually evil in this book. These days that is almost original!

I haven't read any of these yet, but enjoyed hearing your thoughts. Thanks for sharing!

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this one more, Tracy. I think urban fantasy novels that are part of a series are best read it order. This is a series I really enjoy, but I'm no where near being tired of the genre yet. I think I'm one of the rare ones. LOL
