...... Outer back cover.

FIRST SENTENCE(Prologue): Deep in a forest in Ancient Greece, a young man by the name of Orchis stumbled upon a festival in honour of the god Dionysius.

MEMORABLE MOMENT (Page 205): Three monitor screens were attached to the desk at his eye level. Stacked on the left side of the desk were Twenty Mission Control (MCS) server components, the software that directs the drones and their targets.

MY THOUGHTS: Oh no! One of those books that reinforce my dislike of the star rating system and I find myself in such a dilemma reviewing. Do I give it a four star rating for being a fast paced, intelligent novel that combines the medical with the military (not to mention orchids)? OR do I rate it three out of five because, peppered with a tad too much physical violence and worse still, sexual violence, it wasn't altogether to my taste?

Star ratings aside.

A novel that certainly lives up to the claims on the back cover. 'An action-packed thrill ride that will have you questioning suspects, motives and outcomes until the very last page'? Yes, Not For Profit was all of this ...... and more.

As a very much up-to-date, suspense-filled thriller this is a read that has it all - terrorism, politics, more technology (drones included) than you can shake a stick at, and male and female characters that are on an equal footing in all ways. And yes, the orchids.

Such an original addition,  I found the occasional tracts devoted to the history and care of main character, Dr James, beloved orchids a welcome (and fascinating) relief from the violence which though realistic rather than gratuitous I still struggled with.

Definitely for adult readers only. Essentially a good read but one I suspect may well appeal more to men.

I would probably enjoy this if I read it, but it sounds more like a story that would be a hit as a movie.

Hi Tracy,

These authors must be following the same bloggers with their review copies, as I also have this one in my pile, although it is still quite some way down!

I was pleased that you considered the violence to be realistic and intrinsic to the storyline, I can cope with that.

I do think that I might struggle with having too many military technical references, not an area I am particularly interested in. However, I shall approach the book with an open mind, after taking your thoughts and comments on board.

Thanks for such an honest review,

Yvonne

Tracy, thanks for sharing your honest thoughts about this book. I dislike superfluous violence in books (or movies).

Star ratings do make things more complicated esp if you like some elements but not others. Sounds like a good one overall though with good pacing

The orchid thing in a book like this actually sounds intriguing. Agreed that it sounds like a nice touch.

Alas, with my current reading mood, I lost interest at the synopsis. Glad that it hooked you though! ^_^
