A HOG UNACQUAINTED WITH MATHEMATICS?

Sophomoric, hammy effusions, wrongheaded, rancorous and pathetically self-aggrandising.

As unacquainted with art, as a hog is with mathematics.

From Julie Burchill's Unchosen through to Emily Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights by way of AA Milne's The House At Pooh Corner the Guardian newspaper enlightens us of the top five most scathing book reviews.

  1. Just goes to show that everyone likes different books. :) Wow!

  2. Obviously some venom there. I actually prefer Wuthering Heights to Jane Eyre. Wonder what that says about me?

...and I'm pretending I didn't see what Dorothy Parker had to say about Pooh.

  4. These were indeed nasty.

Of course some of these were old reviews of classics, but some of these were aimed at contemporary writers. I am all for speaking one's mind and criticizing what one does not like. I am very against such blatant disrespect and meanness.
