I really wasn't too sad when I first heard the ugly rumour that the Toothfairy (whispers) didn't exist. I mean there were only so many teeth I could lose and therefore our relationship was never going to be a long lasting one.
Much more devastating was hearing that some children actually believed that Father Christmas was not real - I know, shocking isn't it?
But what has this to do with my recent article on the EASTER BUNNY?

I have heard rumours that he/she (?) might also be an urban myth and not real at all or at least does not have its origins in paganism.
Did you know that Easter was originally a pagan festival dedicated to Eostre the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, whose consort was a hare, the forerunner of our Easter bunny? (Of course you did because you read my post on the subject.)
The trouble is that they are wrong. The colourful myths of Eostre and her hare companion, who in some versions is a bird transformed into an egg-laying rabbit, aren't historically pagan. They are modern fabrications, cludged together in an unresearched assumption of pagan precedence.

OK, OK, so there may not be any actual evidence to prove that there is an Easter Bunny but do you have any evidence that proves there isn't an Easter Bunny? No, I thought not.
I hadn't gotten to read your other post, so all of this was new to me . . . interesting, especially about Eostre.

ReplyDeleteWe always had Easter baskets, but it never was attributed to the Easter bunny (so no belief). The tooth-fairy only left money for the first few teeth (so limited belief), but Santa.... now as long as you "believed" Santa would visit, he did!!
ReplyDeleteI always assumed that the myth of Eastern Bunny originated long ago. The fact that it's actually a modern fabrication is a bit sad.

ReplyDeleteMr. Bunny left a rather large basket of those lovely and colourful foil wrapped eggs at my sister's house while we were there. Didn't see him hop in and he must be stealthy as the dog didn't notice either.
