WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG.

WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG by A.A. MILNE (With decorations by ERNEST H. SHEPARD coloured by MARK BURGESS).

SOURCE: A church fete buy.

THE BOOK {According to amazon.co.uk}: Curl up with A. A. Milne’s classic book of poetry for children, When We Were Very Young. This is the first volume of rhymes written especially for children by A.A. Milne – as popular now as when they were first written. Featuring E. H. Shepard’s original illustrations, When We Were Very Young is a heart-warming and funny introduction to children’s poetry, offering the same sense of humour, imagination and whimsy that we’ve come to expect from his favourite books about Winnie-the-Pooh, that Bear of Very Little Brain.

FIRST SENTENCE POEM {Corner-Of-The-Street}: *

MEMORABLE MOMENT VERSE {Sand-Between-The-Toes}: *

MY THOUGHTS: A big fan of the Winnie The Pooh stories, it was this along with the wonderful illustrations that initially drew me to the book rather than the poems themselves.

Comprising 44 poems for the young and young at heart. Whilst I cannot say I found the poems exceptional they did have a certain charm in that the author managed to capture perfectly the simplicity and wonder of childhood without being overly sentimental.

First published in 1924. Just as many past generations of readers have enjoyed these poems they are of a timeless quality that I'm sure will be loved by many generations yet to come.

I have a book that includes both "Winnie the Pooh" and "House at Pooh Corner", but I just checked and this collection is not a part of it. Maybe I need to add it to my collection. I do love the original Pooh drawings. (though I'll admit to being a fan of Disney's Pooh as well)

This was nice...I'm glad you reviewed it!

I do not read a lot of poetry, but this sounds like something I would like, especially something I could share with my daughter (when she's a little older).

Oh I do love Winnie the Pooh so much!!

I have quite a few WTP collectables around my house - stuffed animals, snow globes, a beautiful winter scene carousel that my in laws bought me.

I too love Winnie-the-Pooh and also would be drawn to anything written by AA Milne.

I missed these as a child and as an adult. Perhaps I will make up for that :)

Sounds like just my kind of book and it's great to know it's by one of my favorites, A A Milne! Many thanks for your review, Tracy, I would certainly want to pick this one, even if not for the poems but for those illustrations, just like you, they draw me in right away!

Hi Tracy,

Being the Disney addict family that we are, WTP has and always will be, a firm favourite with us. Disney Princesses may come and go, but WTP and friends are always there by our side!

Any poetry which can capture the imagination of a young child has to be applauded and encouraged and I particularly like the illustrations, as they tell a mini story all of their own!

Nice review as always and it made the trip to the church fete worth while!

Yvonne.
