KITTY AND THE SILVER BULLET.

KITTY AND THE SILVER BULLET by CARRIE VAUGHN.

Kitty Norville's a late-night radio DJ, and her show, 'Kitty's Midnight Hour' is really popular. She's out of the closet now - the whole world saw her turn wolf on live national television. And she has a boyfriend who actually seems to understand her. Does this mean Kitty can finally settle down to a normal life - or is this just the calm before the storm?

When her mother falls ill, Kitty rushes back to Denver - and right back to the abusive pack of werewolves she escaped a year ago. To make matters worse, war is brewing between the city's two oldest vampires, threatening the whole supernatural community. Though she wants to stay neutral, kitty is once again drawn into a world of politics and violence. To protect her family, her lover and herself, she'll have to choose sides ... and maybe become the very thing she hates: a killer.
...... Outer back cover.

FIRST SENTENCE: (Chapter 1): I hated the smell of this place: concrete and institutional.

MEMORABLE MOMENT (Page 291): ...... the fabric of the sleeves collapsed. The effect spread to his pants. The clothing wilted, withered, then the fabric itself blackened and crumbled, turning to ash. The body within decayed - three hundred years in a few minutes - shriveling, desicating, turning black, turning to ash. It spread to his neck, his head, his golden hair turning white, then to powder.

MY THOUGHTS: Back on form after the last book that though still good was slightly less so than the previous two books.

Part four in the series (there are at least another 4 to go) what I loved about this book was that, 'typical' werewolf stuff aside, as well as seeing the human side of the characters we also get to see the, well, not so human side, which equally deals with the problems/difficulties encountered by some 'regular' people ..... politics, power struggles, domestic abuse, gang warfare, rivalry, insecurities, it's all here.

Concentrating more on Kitty's (human) family and the vampires than the previous books, it also made for good reading in that we got to see the darker side of some of the characters. Then of course we got to see more of Detective Hardin, a woman charged with starting a specialist unit set up to deal with the supernaturals of Denver, she provides some wonderfully humorous light relief.

The best bit of the book though - the potential dilemma faced by Kitty's very ill mother. I don't mean to be too cryptic and yet at the same I don't want to give anything away BUT it really this element of the story really did provide food for thought and left me wondering what I'd do in both Kitty's and her mother's shoes.

And so onto the question of whether or not this can be read as a standalone read. In short I'd say yes BUT I'd really advise that you start at the beginning as though the story lines are not reliant on your having read any of the other books (goodness knows I read book two before book 1) part of the enjoyment of the series is seeing how the characters develop.

IF PURCHASED, WHERE?: Purchased with a book voucher given for my birthday.

Given a choice between vampire/werewolf and time travel, the time travel wins out. I do read some alternate species novels and admit I do enjoy them, though zombie novels haven't worked for me yet. I do plan to read Pride Prejudice and Zombies as that sounds most fun.

Hmm...doubtful it's one for me but I can't help but chuckle at the lead character's name (Kitty) when she turns into a werewolf (aka dog). ^_^

Sounds like an interesting twist on the whole werewolf/vampire genre.

Glad it was better than the last. Like so many of the series I read, there are always some slower books, but it's great when the author follows up with a strong one again.

Glad you are enjoying this series, that is one cool memorable moment.
I agree, part of the fun in series books is getting to see fav characters develop along the way.
Great review!

I've never read anything by this author; this sounds like an interesting book, but there are so many vampire and werewolf books out there right now I'm not sure I'm up for this series. :P

I'm more intrigued by the mother-daughter thread. And I like the kitty/werewolf contrast. It's cool to receive book vouchers as birthday gifts, isn't it?
